The Social Media Spend-Impact Disconnect - Forbes

The Social Media Spend-Impact Disconnect - Forbes: "40.6 percent report having a good qualitative sense, but not a quantitative assessment. 47.9 percent report have not been able to show any impact yet.
The Contribution of Social Media to Company Performance"

Social media spending is expected to climb to a 20.9 percent share of marketing budgets in the next five years. This share was only 5.6 percent in 2009. What is striking, however, is that only 3.4 percent of marketing leaders report that social media contributes very highly to firm performance; 40 percent report a below average contribution (see insert).
These are among the latest findings from The CMO Survey. Conducted biannually since August 2008, the latest edition received responses from 289 top marketing executives.
What explains this social media spend-impact disconnect?

The State of Social Media - EContent Magazine

The State of Social Media - EContent Magazine:

"Social media has evolved into a personal online identity. Before, it was used to connect with friends and update your status," says Jesse Till, social media coordinator for Chatter Buzz Media. "Now, it defines a persona. It's a chance for a person to express and broadcast themselves to the world."

The age-old axiom remains true: The more things change, the more they stay the same. While technology has rapidly progressed since social media was first introduced, the big picture hasn't changed. "People still yearn for human connections and experiences, and they want to share those connections across various platforms and devices," says Abani Heller, CEO of Classmates.
Sure, posting trip photos, tweeting links, and networking with old co-workers is fun. But online citizens want to tap into the pulse of the world around them, belong to a community, and be recognized. "Social media has evolved into a personal online identity. Before, it was used to connect with friends and update your status," says Jesse Till, social media coordinator for Chatter Buzz Media. "Now, it defines a persona. It's a chance for a person to express and broadcast themselves to the world."

A Guide to the Best Times to Post on Social Media (Infographic) - StumbleUpon

A Guide to the Best Times to Post on Social Media (Infographic) - StumbleUpon:

Do you post social-media updates when your audience has the highest chance of seeing them, or just whenever you think of it or happen to have a free minute?
If you aren't posting to a social media site when most of your audience members are on it, all that time you spent crafting the update goes to waste. And you're a busy person. You don't have any time to waste.
An infographic from Fannit.com lists the best and worst times to post to all the major social media sites: Pinterest, LinkedIn, Google+, Twitter, Facebook and your blog. While all audiences are different, you can use these times as a general guide. Here are the best times to post to each site:
Pinterest: On Saturday from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. and 8 p.m.-11 p.m.
LinkedIn: 7 a.m.-8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.-6 p.m.
Google+: 9 a.m.-11 a.m.
Twitter: On weekends from 1 p.m.-3 p.m.
Facebook: Weekdays 6 a.m.- 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.-5 p.m.
Blog: Monday, Friday and Saturday at 11 a.m.

Facebook rating pushes firms to up social-media responsiveness - The Globe and Mail

Facebook rating pushes firms to up social-media responsiveness - The Globe and Mail:

When the message that “your call is important” comes from a robotic, prerecorded voice, a customer could be forgiven for being incredulous.

Sitting on hold, listening to Muzak and repeatedly hearing that disingenuous message can be frustrating, to say the least. Perhaps that’s why many people are turning to social media when they need to reach companies – whether to post a complaint or a compliment, or to ask a question about their products. It does not tie up customers on the phone, and a public social-media post demands accountability from companies to provide better service.

So long square photos? Instagram adds portrait and landscape options | Technology | The Guardian

So long square photos? Instagram adds portrait and landscape options | Technology | The Guardian: advertisements on Instagram.

It
turns out that nearly one in five photos or videos people post aren’t
in the square format,’ admits Facebook subsidiary, with eye on video ads

Instagram now allows landscape and portrait photos and videos.
Instagram built its community of 300 million users
around a simple rule: every photo or video that they shared using its
app would be square. Now the Facebook subsidiary is ditching that
policy.
The app’s latest update introduces portrait and landscape options for
both photos and videos, in a move that may be aimed at encouraging more
brands to run video advertisements on Instagram.

The company is positioning the change as more about its users,
unsurprisingly. “Square format has been and always will be part of who
we are. That said, the visual story you’re trying to tell should always
come first,” explained its blog post announcing the news.

“It turns out that nearly one in five photos or videos people post
aren’t in the square format, and we know that it hasn’t been easy to
share this type of content on Instagram: friends get cut out of group
shots, the subject of your video feels cramped and you can’t capture the
Golden Gate Bridge from end to end.”

The company added that it was “especially excited about what this
update means for video on Instagram, which in widescreen can be more
cinematic than ever”. Not to mention less of a pain for advertisers to
reformat ads originally shot for television.

Instagram added the ability to upload 15-second videos to its app in June 2013, with many brands having since used the feature from their official accounts. The first video advertisements appeared in October 2014.

Pew: Millennials get political news from Facebook, social media

For the younger generation known as “millennials,” social media — particularly Facebook — has replaced local television as the biggest source of news about politics and government, a new poll says. A little more than six in ten millennials — 61% — “report getting political news on Facebook in a given week, a much larger percentage than turn to any other news source,”reports the Pew Research Center.

The news habits of the”Millennial Generation” — those born between 1981 and 1996 — differ quite a bit than those of “Generation X” (born between 1965 and 1980) and the highly-populated “Baby Boomers,” who entered the world from 1946 to 1964.
For Internet-using Baby Boomers, 60% said local television tops their list for political news, Pew said — very nearly the same percentage as Facebook-using millennials. How many Baby Boomers rely on Facebook for politics? Only 39%.
Members of Generation X — the group between the boomers and the millennials — is pretty much split on the issue of news sources.
The poll says that 51% of Gen Xers rely on Facebook for political news — another 46% rely on local TV.
All of which explains why campaigns across the country like to invest in television commercials and Facebook postings.
“As the research continues,” Pew reports, “these data suggest that younger and older generations espouse fundamental differences in the ways they stay informed about political news — differences that are of particular interest as the 2016 election campaigns ramp up.”

Social Media Marketing Tips for Local Businesses

Source: Social Media Marketing Tips for Local Businesses:

So many times I’ve heard businesses -- especially small businesses -- say that social media just isn’t for them. It takes too much time. They’re not sure where to start or how to keep it going. And besides, they should be focusing on actually running their business --not just posting pictures online -- right?
Wrong.
As social media continues to change the way people communicate, it has become an increasingly important tool for small businesses. Let’s face it: Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn aren’t going away. While many social media platforms began as a way to connect friends and family, it’s become the norm for all types of business to have some sort of social media presence.

5 Reasons You Need A Social Media Manager | Social Media Today

Original Source: 5 Reasons You Need A Social Media Manager | Social Media Today:

"Business owners around the globe are asking themselves whether or not they need a social media manager. However, more and more of them are noticing the popularity of social media, but don't know how, where, when, or why they should jump on the bandwagon themselves. They notice their colleagues, peers, friends, children & family have jumped on board, on a more personal level. But, what so many of them fail to see, is that their present and future customers have jumped on for a ride too!

Right now, as you read this, your customers are flying down the road going mach 5 with no end in sight. They're enjoying themselves too while reading/writing reviews, articles, comments & opinions on your business. They're chatting amongst themselves (and to the rest of the internet world) about their latest visit, what their experience was, and even how it bugs them that Sally the cashier always seems "nice", but never says thank you when they are leaving.

Wouldn't you love the opportunity to be in that cart flying down the road too? Do you want to know what your customers are saying about you? Do you want to be able to effectively converse back with them? Wouldn't you love to hear, first hand, about their experiences? Wouldn't it be great to know how they felt about Sally so you could enforce stronger cashier policies?

There is no excuse for you not being in that bandwagon yourself. If you want to continually grow your business every year with the goal of higher profits and better ROI's, then you need to be in that cart. Most importantly, you need to be sitting in the cart as strategically as possible so your customers don't mistake you for luggage!

If the last four paragraphs didn't provide you with enough reasons as to why you need a social media manager...don't fret! Here are five more:"

Mark Zuckerberg Praises Frank Gehry: “He’s Very Efficient” | ArchDaily

Mark Zuckerberg Praises Frank Gehry: “He’s Very Efficient” | ArchDailyAfter Facebook began its move into its new Frank Gehry-designed headquarters last week, founder Mark Zuckerberg has praised his architect for his work. In a post on hispersonal Facebook page yesterday, Zuckerberg shares the story of how Gehry he initially turned down Gehry’s request to design the project, saying that “even though we all loved his architecture… We figured he would be very expensive and that would send the wrong signal about our culture.”

But Frank Gehry persisted, saying that he would match any bids the company received. As a result, Zuckerberg has now praised Gehry – somewhat uncharacteristically – for being “very efficient.”
Read Zuckerberg’s full statement, after the break.
“I want to share a story as we settle into our new building at Facebook. When we first announced we were adding a building to our campus, Frank Gehry reached out and asked to design it. He really believes in our mission to connect the world. But even though we all loved his architecture, we initially said no. We figured he would be very expensive and that would send the wrong signal about our culture.
“Frank came back to us and said we should go get other bids and that he would beat them all — and he did. As I learned, most building construction wastes a lot of materials and time due to poor planning. Frank has designed special software to assist in his architecture, so he’s very efficient.
“In the end, our building finished ahead of schedule and under budget. It’s the only construction project I’ve ever heard of achieving this. It ended up costing us much less than any other major developments planned in Silicon Valley and taking way less time to build.” - Mark Zuckerberg

Why Your Business Must Embrace Social Media Yesterday - Forbes

Why Your Business Must Embrace Social Media Yesterday - Forbes:

For years I thought “I don’t care about social media. My business isn’t one of ‘those’ businesses.” Maybe you’ve been thinking the same thing. Perhaps you decided to dip your toes in the water, but you’re certainly not going to make a serious investment. How would you calculate the ROI anyhow? I’ve had some good and not-so-good interactions with companies through a variety of channels in the past month or so. It was shocking to see how differently each company chose to embrace (and in some cases ignore) social media.

The Evolution of Social Media
A really long time ago, a junior employee approached the CEO of a company and said “There’s this new technology that people are starting to use. My friends and I all use it, and I think that as a company we should allow our customers to use the new technology to communicate with us.” The CEO dismissed the young employee and his crazy notion that customers expected someone to answer them using that silly device called a telephone. The CEO was probably thinking, “Why do we need telephones? Our customers come into our office or store if they need something.” A similar discussion certainly happened decades later around email, after all why support customers with email when they can just call. Though technologies have changed over the years, essentially telephone and email were the channels to communicate with customers then, just like Facebook and Twitter are the channels today.
Fresh Perspective From Traditional Companies
I had a reason to contact Honeywell regarding a new thermostat we installed as part of a home renovation. Their response via social media was so swift and impressive, that I felt compelled to ask them some questions about how they chose to adopt social media. I was candidly shocked to get a quick response from someone who makes thermostats (since my preferred airline, a business where timeliness really matters, took days to respond to a request for help via Twitter). I spoke with Dane Hartzell, Global Director of ePresence for Honeywell and here is what he had to say:
“Our objective is to engage with our customers — and potential customers — on their terms. Whatever way is easiest for them, we will support. Social channels are great because sometimes people use it to say what they are thinking. Social listening tools allow us to pick up on that, and engage with customers without them even directly asking for help.” Dane also commented at how with social media, since it is not a real-time like telephone, allows them to serve multiple customers at a time and be responsive to all parties.
Dane continued, “A year ago, getting back to the customer the same day seemed acceptable to the customer and they even seemed surprised to hear from a company at all. Today, we feel if we don’t acknowledge the customer within five minutes, and let them know we are working on their issue, they have shorter patience.” What most impressed me about Hartzell’s thoughts was about how Honeywell sees social media. Since in the past they worked through channels, they did not have much direct interaction with customers. “Now with social, we get first-hand interaction that is creating sincere excitement in the company. We parse out the interaction data and help each team understand what it means for them as a daily recap to everyone from executives to engineers.”
Honeywell has embraced customer service with social media, and they see channels like Twitter as a new way to build a community with their customers.

Brand Name Future - Innovate By Day

As part of a continuing series, we’ll be creating speculative anecdotes that examine the future of social media marketing.
In our present-day society where social media is fast becoming integrated with daily life, it’s not hard to believe that one day, we’ll see services like Twitter and Facebook transcend the machines that currently deliver them. Whether it’s the little black brick we call the smartphone vanishing into the ether to be replaced by new handhelds, or “wearables” that take over and meld seamlessly into our clothes, it’s highly likely that the future will offer us all new ways to more organically communicate via these services. We’re already seeing the proliferation of wearables, be it in smartwatches, exercise straps, gesture bands, etc. Branding is just one step behind, but with technological exoskeletons being developed by the military and the fact you can tweet from your car now, we’re well on our way.
I’d like to peer into that future for a moment, and I invite you to join me.
